“Сancellation” of a military leader during the years of soviet power: motives and instrumentsLomonosov Public Administration Journal. Series 21 2026. Vol. 23. N 2. p.175-197

The policy of "canceling" any state, political, or military figure is one of the mechanisms of "symbolic politics" aimed at consolidating the results of the intra-elite power struggle in the public consciousness. During the Soviet era, the country's military elite was repeatedly subjected to repressive measures, accompanied by the use of "canceling" tools in symbolic politics. The objectives of this article are to identify the mechanisms of "canceling" applied to renowned military leaders who, for various reasons, lost their place in the country's military elite at different stages of the USSR's existence. To address these issues, a case study method was used, selected from three significant periods of the USSR's existence. Institutional, semantic, and semiotic analysis were employed to identify and describe the "canceling mechanisms." The authors' analysis revealed that the policy of "canceling" was used as an accompanying mechanism for the application of repression against those military figures who were perceived as a threat to the existing political regime. The degree and forms of physical violence used during repression varied, but the "cancellation" mechanism, established by the early 1920s, remained unchanged in its core elements. This mechanism included three key elements: a) "silencing"; b) transferring achievements to another historical figure; c) direct or indirect accusations of errors or crimes against the "cancelled" person before the Soviet government. The results of the "cancellation" mechanism were temporary and could subsequently be revised.

The set of memorable dates is one of the supporting elements in the toolkit of historical policy, implemented. This toolkit is applied in the form of anniversaries - sets of complex measures to update historical memory. The objective of this article is to identify the typological features of the "anniversary" practice in the historical policy of Russia in the twentieth century. The basic research method is to identify anniversary cases, based on those memorable dates that played the most important role in historical policy at different stages of the existence of Russian statehood. The result of the study was the identification of two basic tasks of the "anniversary" practice. The first of them is the formalization of the transformation of public consciousness, following a change in state policy or public reaction to this policy. The second task is to mobilize public consciousness to achieve the goals of either state policy or public activity. In each of the three cases under consideration, these two functions were present, but in different proportions, which influenced the nature and results of each specific anniversary practice. Keywords: history of Russia, historical policy, historical memory, historical anniversary, banquet campaign, anniversary of the Red Army, anniversary of the October Revolution.
